Students write their "Laws of Life"
Students wrote from their hearts as they took part in the Laws of Life essay program during January and February, which encourages students to reflect and write about the values they believe will help them live successful and productive lives.
The essays are part of the students' involvement in the school's community service program and the contest is governed by Glenholme's Community Service Program Coordinator, Ms. Grove. The essays were evaluated by a panel of judges that included Ms. Michaud, Ms. Cushing, Ms. Troester, and Ms. Tiso.
All the essay writers were recognized at a formal dinner held at the school. Matt S, Rachel J, Patrick B, Tom H, Colin F and Sarah P were the authors of the top essays and celebrated their accomplishment with a special trip to dine at their favorite restaurant.
"I am truly glad that our students have this program to participate in each year. It is great to see how much they learn and realize about themselves, as well as those influencing them when they sit down to write. My favorite moment is when a student has finished the final draft and smile as they read their own work and take in their accomplishment with a satisfied smile," said Grove.
"It is great to hear the students say such positive things about the different role models in their lives. I have really enjoyed being a part of this program and reading about how the students have grown, matured, and changed into kind and caring students," said Cushing.
Among the topics students wrote about were past mentors, previous teachers, parents and people met simply in passing. Matt S's essay entitled "A Friend" has been submitted to the School for Ethical Education (SEE) to be entered into a statewide contest administered by SEE. Students whose essays were selected as the top essays in the statewide competition will be honored at an awards ceremony this spring.
The Laws of Life Essay Contest was created by Sir John Templeton in 1987 and has spread throughout the United States to more than 30 countries around the world.
